Frappe di Carnevale, also known by other names depending on the region (chiacchiere, cenci, bugie, galani, sfrappole and crostoli), are one of the signature sweets of the carnival period in Italy. Their origin dates back to ancient Rome, where during the Saturnalia-a festival dedicated to the god Saturn-they prepared fried sweets made of flour and honey, similar to today's frappe.

Frappe are characterized by a light, crisp pastry, prepared with simple ingredients such as flour, sugar, eggs, butter and a touch of liquor (such as grappa, rum or white wine) to enhance the flavor.
